At the periphery of the downtown/Old Oakland neighborhood, right at to the edge of the OPD headquarters and 880 freeway, sits a strange looking pink box of a building, that seems like an odd dimensional portal to another time and place, a time when the urban restaurant bar was one of service, comfort, and community.…

Longtime Oaklanders will remember the old Hofbrau set firmly on the corner of Grand Avenue and Broadway for decades. Luka’s Taproom & Lounge strives to keep the spirit of that old establishment alive, with a young, fresh, and modern twist that appeals to the new breed of Oaklandites. The restaurant is a pleasant room with…

Enter The Trappist. Easy to miss, this mysterious & dark establishment is a timeless oasis from the bustle and boom of Downtown Oakland. A credit to the Old Oakland area, the building is beautifully restored inside and out and has doubled in size since the impressive transformation to European looking bar first began in…

Lonely looming over the Grand Avenue side of Lake Merritt, the Bellevue-Staten Building is a gem of Oakland architecture. Yes, it’s THAT building. Built in 1929 by famed architect Herman Carl Baumann, it is a distinct and extra elegant example of the art deco style of the time, with a spanish colonial flare thrown in.…

Situated on the “Oakland Riviera” between Coast Guard Island and Alameda’s Park Street Bridge, Union Point Park offers a relaxing waterfront oasis in a traditionally industrial zone of the city. Opened in 2005, the park in its early days was an easy place to score a BBQ pit on the weekend, but word’s got…

Since its groundbreaking in 1927, the Oakland Scottish Rite Center has loomed over Lake Merritt, an edifice to the secret society of masonry that has remained a force in Oakland since the city was founded over 150 years ago. Here is a great place to buy books. Yes there are a great many independent booksellers in the Oakland area, but Half Price Books is notable for being simply a great shopping experience. Not only are there great book finds new & used, but also divination decks, used CDs & records, software & games, and…

Chinatown seems to be the busiest pedestrian area of Oakland, which is probably why the crowd-loving oaktownman enjoys going there so much. And especially if you’re counting your pennies, oaktownman’s favorite bakery Tao Yuen Pastry is where you should go to pick up a snack. After waiting in a modest line to get in to…

“…given the city’s dubious history of bailing out bakeries, including one that turned out to be part of a criminal enterprise, city officials should consider a policy to allow private businesses, even bakeries, to rise or fall on their own merits.” http://articles.sfgate.com/2010-06-08/bay-area/21781421_1_new-bakery-oakland-city-council-city-officials

Thanks for that link Kevin. That does seem unfair that Neldams would be treated so differently. I used to go There for cakes an pastries too. Unfortunately, Oaktown is not the fairest of places. Check out this article http://www.eastbayexpress.com/ebx/an-oakland-icon-may-close/Content?oid=1623635 to read about how Lucky’s was give the green light on an expansion that is now squeezing the Merritt bakery out of parking spaces and losing them business, though their business practices are suspect as the article points out.

Oh, I just noticed something about your quote: “…to rise and fall on their own MERITS.” Pun intended? LOL

LOL! Not intended but definitely appreciated! The quote is from the article, for the record. I’m not above helping businesses and I definitely think Oakland should support minority and female owned businesses but Merrit’s business practices are shady. The city auditor came out strongly against the loan: “City Auditor Courtney Ruby has weighed in saying that the report the city received from the Irvna Accountancy Corporation about the Merritt Bakery suggests none of the money will ever be able to be paid back.” http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/inoakland/detail?entry_id=63810
Sounds like a double failure on the city’s part but regardless it’s probably time to bid Merrit farewell.
One last thing, I used to live in this neighborhood and almost always walked to both Lucky’s and Merrit.

Well, Oakland (like many other cities) certainly has a “dubious history” on this score. The Your Black Muslim Bakery that reportedly turned out to be a criminal front is the most egregious example, but hardly the only one. Kev, I think your opening quote just about sums up the whole incident. Of course, we shall see. Common sense appears to be a lost virtue!
